Part of our Furnace Repair guide.
A furnace that keeps turning on and off every few minutes is short cycling. It lights, warm air starts, then it shuts off before the house is warm and tries again. In Arlington that often shows up on the first real cold night. The furnace has sat idle through a mild winter, the filter is loaded with dust and pollen from cooling season, and a cold snap makes it run hard.
If you smell gas (a rotten egg odor), stop here. Do not flip switches, use a phone inside, or try to relight anything. Leave the home and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, or anyone has a headache, nausea, or dizziness that eases outdoors, get everyone out and call 911.
On a normal call for heat, the burners light and the blower runs until the rooms reach the setpoint. Short cycling stops that early: the burners die after a few seconds, or the furnace runs two or three minutes, cools, and starts again. On a cold night many furnaces run about 10 to 15 minutes. A couple of minutes at a time, all evening, is the problem. If the furnace never starts, use the furnace not kicking on checklist.
Turn the furnace off for 30 seconds and back on, once or twice. If the same code returns, stop.
A clogged filter restricts airflow, the heat exchanger overheats, and the high-limit switch shuts the burners off. The blower often keeps running, so the vents cool off and the burners try again. If the air stays cold while the fan runs, see why a furnace blows cold air in Grand Prairie. Replace the filter, open the vents, and restart once. If it trips again, stop. Repeated overheating is hard on the heat exchanger. If a burning smell shows up while the furnace is starting and stopping, shut it off. When a furnace smells like burning in Garland and a weird smell when the furnace turns on in Irving separate a dusty first startup from a smell that means stop.
The wrong size, a crooked filter, or a very high-MERV filter can restrict air just like a dirty one. So can a dusty evaporator coil above an attic furnace. Confirm the size and seat the door. Leave the coil and the blower to a technician.
A coating on the flame sensor is common after months off. The burners light, the sensor does not prove the flame, and the gas shuts off within seconds. The furnace retries, then often locks out, and the rooms never heat. Leave the sensor to a technician. See our guide to a furnace that will not ignite.
A thermostat in front of a supply vent, in the sun, or above a lamp reads a hot pocket and ends the cycle while other rooms are cool. Fan ON is separate: the blower runs between cycles and the air feels cool, so set it to AUTO. A cycles-per-hour, swing, or heat-anticipator setting that is too tight can short cycle a healthy furnace.
A furnace that is too large for the house satisfies the thermostat and shuts off before other rooms are warm, then starts again. Rule out airflow and the safety switches first. If replacement is the fix, the price depends on the system. You should hear it after diagnosis. The Arlington furnace replacement cost guide covers what moves that number.
Closed supplies and blocked returns cut airflow, and the limit switch opens. Clear the returns and open the supplies you use. A bedroom door that closes off a room with no return can add to it.
The pressure switch proves the furnace is venting. A blocked intake or exhaust, a bad hose, a sagging vent, or a weak inducer opens it and shuts the gas off. High-efficiency furnaces use white PVC. From the ground, check those outdoor pipes for leaves, a nest, or a cover. A hard freeze can ice a pipe or a trap that sat unused all fall. Do not open the flue. Soot, a yellow flame, or a rollout trip means leave the furnace off.
A weak motor, a bad capacitor, or a dust-caked wheel moves too little air, so the limit opens on a clean filter. A failing control board can drop the burners or the blower, or bring the same code back after a reset. Write the blinks down. That testing is furnace repair work.
Many Arlington furnaces sit in the attic, so the filter, the vent pipes, and the drain are easy to skip until the first cold night. A loose panel, a clogged summer drain, or debris in the intake can shut the cycle down. These furnaces make water as they run, and a float in a full pan can stop the burners. If you cannot look safely, or water is on the wiring, leave it.
Call if it still short cycles after a new filter and open vents, the same code returns, or the burners die within seconds. Leave the furnace off if a rollout switch trips, you see soot or a yellow flame, or the limit keeps opening. Repeated overheating is a reason to inspect the heat exchanger, not to bypass the switch.
If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone outside and call 911. If you smell gas, leave the home and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Test an alarm on each floor before the first cold front. Repair cost depends on the cause and the system. A technician gives the price after diagnosis, before any work starts.

Is furnace short cycling dangerous? Short cycling is not an emergency by itself. Repeated overheating is hard on the heat exchanger. If you smell gas, leave the home and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone outside and call 911.
Can a dirty filter cause a furnace to short cycle? Yes. A clogged filter restricts airflow, the heat exchanger overheats, and the high-limit switch shuts the burners off. Replace the filter with the size printed on the frame, open the vents, and restart once. If it happens again, call for service.
How long should a furnace run per cycle? There is no single correct runtime. On a steady call for heat in cold weather, many furnaces run about 10 to 15 minutes. Cycles of only two or three minutes, repeating all evening, are short cycling.
Should I turn the furnace off if it keeps short cycling? If a new filter and open vents stop it, you can keep using the furnace. If it still shuts off every few minutes, turn it off and call. Leave it off for a repeated limit trip, soot, a yellow flame, or a carbon monoxide alarm. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
Why does my furnace short cycle with a new filter? The wrong size, a poor fit, or a higher-MERV filter than the furnace was set up to use can still restrict air. A dirty coil or a weak blower can do the same after a filter change. If the right filter and open vents do not help, a technician needs to check airflow.
